Welcome to Green Dog Dolls...

I write silly stories about my whimsical, fabric doll creations, as I travel through the UK and Europe, navigating the ups and downs of alternative lifestyles, in pursuit of a more sustainable life.

About Green Dog Dolls

Suitcases nomadic textile artist mobile studio.

What is a Green Dog?

Un Perro Verde (A Green Dog), is a Spanish idiom meaning oddball.

What is a Nomadic Textile Artist?

A Textile Artist creates original artworks using the medium of textiles; fabrics, yarn & fibres.
A Nomad is a person who does not stay long in the same place; a wanderer.

The Dolls

Green Dog dolls may not be ‘dolls’ in the traditional sense, as in the form of ‘a small human’, but they are all unique characters that have evolved through, what starts as an idea and a simple line drawn on a piece of paper, to becoming a 3 dimensional form fully realised in fabric and yarn.

Green Dog Dolls is an artisan collection, of beautifully handcrafted, one-of-a-kind, whimsical characters each with a story to tell and lots of love to give.

A passion for creativity, vintage textiles, silly storytelling and collecting things is the inspiration behind this quirky collection of lovable oddballs.

Every doll is handmade by myself, using beautiful textiles, that have been carefully chosen with environmental and animal welfare ethics in mind.

Background & Experience

I started making dolls and toys as a young child, using left over scraps from my mother’s dressmaking and an old Victorian Singer sewing machine that previously belonged to my great grandmother.

Growing up in Oxford, where I studied art, I experimented with many different mediums and developed a passion for constructed textiles, 3D soft sculpture, doll making and story telling.

I went on to study Textiles at Brighton University, BA (Hons) Fashion textiles and then on to study a PGCE at Truro College in Cornwall in Textiles Design and Technology.

I have worked in a variety of professional roles within Textiles including;

  • The Fashion Industry
  • Textile Artist
  • Textiles Teacher

I enjoy sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm for Textiles and hope you are inspired to have a go.

"I'm Not Working, I'm Playing"

Though formally trained, I attribute a lot of what I do as self-taught through what I call “playing”.

People always ask me “What are you doing?” My reply…”I’m just playing”

Some of my most successful pieces have been happy accidents as a result of playing.

Storytelling & Ethics

All of the funny little dolls I create, have a back story. This narrative is an important part of developing the doll design and is probably my favourite part of working on a new character.

This includes; development of the doll’s personality, the story behind the fabrics used, and the inspiration for the idea.

As a visual storyteller I try to take you on a journey, to show you more than just a finished product.

Ethical considerations are also an important factor in the development of my designs.

I am fascinated with the make-do-and-mend ethos of a time gone by, making do rather than buying new and reusing, recycling or repurposing, something old and worn out, into something new and beautiful.

You will find, recycling, animal welfare and fair trade ideals, feature strongly in my designs, projects and stories.

Thanks for continuing to read until the end...unless you scrolled!
I hope you have enjoyed my story so far, this is just the beginning, there is so much more to come.
Will you join me on this creative journey?

Happy Making ~ Christine x
